Ouarzazate's film industry began in 1962 with the filming of Lawrence of Arabia. The city's dramatic desert landscapes, clear light, and stunning kasbahs attracted filmmakers from around the world. Atlas Studios, founded in 1983, is the largest film studio in Africa and has hosted productions including The Mummy, Gladiator, Alexander, Prince of Persia, Game of Thrones, and many more. Today, Ouarzazate is the undisputed film capital of Morocco.

🎬 Atlas Studios & Cinema Museum

Atlas Studios is one of the largest film studios in the world, covering over 30,000 square meters. Visitors can tour the outdoor sets, including replicas of ancient Egyptian temples, medieval castles, and desert villages used in famous films. The Cinema Museum displays costumes, props, and photographs from productions filmed in Ouarzazate, including Gladiator's armor and sets from Game of Thrones.

🏰 Aït Benhaddou (UNESCO World Heritage)

Just 30 km from Ouarzazate lies Aït Benhaddou, one of Morocco's most spectacular kasbahs and a UNESCO World Heritage site. This fortified village, with its earthen clay buildings and dramatic hilltop location, has been featured in more films than any other location in Morocco, including Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, The Mummy, and Game of Thrones (as Yunkai). The walk to the top offers breathtaking views of the surrounding desert.

Once the residence of the powerful Glaoui family, who controlled the region in the early 20th century, Taourirt Kasbah is a magnificent example of traditional earthen architecture. The labyrinthine interior features intricate painted ceilings, hidden rooms, and stunning views of Ouarzazate from the rooftop. It's also been used as a film location for The Mummy and other productions.

🌴 Fint Oasis

Just a 15-minute drive from Ouarzazate lies Fint Oasis, a hidden paradise of palm groves, traditional villages, and ancient irrigation channels. This tranquil oasis offers a refreshing escape from the desert heat, with walking paths, gardens, and stunning views. It's also been used as a film location for several productions.

Built on the Draa River, this massive dam creates a beautiful turquoise reservoir surrounded by desert mountains.
