Beni Mellal is the center of Morocco's olive oil production, surrounded by endless olive groves.

🏔️ The Pearl of the Middle Atlas

Beni Mellal's history stretches back to the 17th century when it was a Berber stronghold under the Aït Yazza tribe. The name means "Sons of Mellal" (Mellal was a local saint). The city grew in importance due to its strategic location at the crossroads between the Atlantic plains and the Atlas mountains. Today, Beni Mellal is the capital of the Tadla-Azilal region and a major center for agriculture, particularly olives, citrus, and almonds.

💧 Aïn Asserdoune (The Roaring Spring)

The crown jewel of Beni Mellal, Aïn Asserdoune is one of Morocco's most powerful natural springs, gushing over 1,000 liters of crystal-clear water per second from the base of Jbel Tassemit. The water cascades through a lush, terraced garden filled with palm trees, banana plants, and colorful flowers. The site includes a traditional watermill, cafes, and picnic areas. The name "Asserdoune" means "the roaring one" in Tamazight — a fitting description of the powerful flow.

🏰 The Kasbah of Beni Mellal

Perched on a hill overlooking the city, the Kasbah of Beni Mellal (also known as the Kasbah of Ras el Ain) was built in the 17th century by Moulay Ismail to secure the region. The fortress offers panoramic views of the city, the surrounding plains, and the distant Atlas mountains. Within the kasbah walls is the tomb of the local saint Sidi Said, a pilgrimage site for many Moroccans.

🏞️ Jbel Tassemit & Bin El Ouidane Lake

Jbel Tassemit (2,200 m) towers above Beni Mellal and offers hiking opportunities with spectacular views of the Tadla plain. Just 40 km from the city lies Bin El Ouidane Lake, a stunning turquoise reservoir created by the Bin El Ouidane dam on the Oum Er-Rbia river. The lake is surrounded by dramatic cliffs and is popular for boating, fishing, and relaxation.

🫒 Olive Groves & Agriculture

Beni Mellal is the undisputed olive capital of Morocco. The surrounding Tadla Plain is covered with endless olive groves, producing some of the country's finest olive oil. The city is also a center for citrus (oranges, mandarins), almonds, and figs. The annual Olive Festival celebrates the harvest with tastings, crafts, and traditional music.

🛍️ Souk of Beni Mellal

The souk is the vibrant heart of the city, where farmers from the surrounding mountains bring their produce to market. It's an authentic Moroccan experience, far from tourist crowds, with sections for fresh produce, spices, textiles, and livestock. The souk is especially lively on Sunday, the main market day.

🍽️ Gastronomy · Olive Oil & Mountain Flavors

Beni Mellal's cuisine is defined by its agricultural bounty and Berber traditions. Don't miss: olive oil tasting (some of Morocco's best), tagine with olives and preserved lemons, couscous with seasonal vegetables, brochettes (grilled meats), and mint tea served with local almonds. The region is also known for its honey and fig jam.
